How Many Lands Should a Commander Deck Have?

Here is the actual math behind 38 lands, when to adjust, and why 34 is a wish, not a strategy.

The Number You're Probably Running Is Wrong

Thirty-four lands is not a land count. It is a wish.

The community average for Commander decks sits somewhere between 33 and 35 lands, which is, mathematically, a number. Players treat it as a benchmark. They look at what other people submit to deckbuilding databases, see that number reflected back at them, and assume the collective wisdom of the format is speaking. It is not. It is describing what people build. Multiple writers at EDHREC have called the average land count in submitted decks "malnourished" in their own analyses. One review described a 33-land precon base as outright insufficient. This is the endorsing organization for this data telling you their own average is wrong. The average is pulled down by optimistic list-builders who ran out of slots and cut lands last, not by anyone who did the math first.

The danger zone is 32 to 34 lands. Every rigorous deckbuilding voice in the community calls this range indefensible in a midrange build. And here is why it matters more than it would in a two-player format: when you miss land drops in Commander, you are falling behind three opponents simultaneously. They are developing boards. They are forming alliances. They are deciding who looks like a threat. You are sitting there with three lands and a seven-drop, watching the table organize itself without you. That is not bad luck; that is arithmetic. The practical community baseline is 38 lands before you account for archetype, commander cost, or ramp package. That is where the conversation starts, not where it ends.

What 'Enough Lands' Actually Means, Mathematically

The hypergeometric math is not complicated, but it is specific. To reliably hit five mana by turn five with no ramp and no card draw, you need 42 to 43 lands in a 99-card deck. That is the floor the probability models produce. Nobody runs 43 lands, and they should not have to, because ramp spells exist and do real work. The practical community target of 38 lands covers turn-four land drops in over 80 percent of games, because Cultivate and its category of spells close the gap between the mathematical ideal and what a playable deck actually looks like. This is the correct way to think about the relationship: lands and ramp are co-dependent, not interchangeable.

Cultivate costs three mana. To cast it on curve, you need three lands in play by turn three. If you are running 34 lands, you will not reliably see three lands by turn three. Which means the ramp spell you are relying on to compensate for your low land count frequently arrives in a hand where you cannot cast it on curve anyway. You have created a deck that fails at both axes simultaneously: not enough lands to enable the ramp, not enough ramp to patch the land deficit. The failure compounds quietly. Sol Ring helps because it costs one mana and produces two, meaning you can cast it on turn one regardless of your land count. A four-mana rock you cannot cast until turn four because you are stuck on three lands does not help. The distinction matters. Fast mana reduces pressure on your land count. Slow mana requires lands to function, which means it requires the land count to already be correct.

The Answer Depends on What Your Deck Is Actually Trying to Do

Put three archetypes next to each other and the numbers stop being abstract.

Landfall and lands-matter builds, the kind you build around Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait or The Necrobloom, want 40 to 45 lands. This is not excessive. Every land drop in an Aesi deck is a draw trigger. Every land entering the battlefield in a The Necrobloom deck is a Plant token, or a Zombie token if you are hitting the seven-distinct-names threshold. The land is not mana infrastructure in these decks. The land is the threat. Running fewer lands to "keep the deck tight" in a landfall build is bracket four behavior in a bracket two body. You are sabotaging your own engine to feel efficient.

Midrange decks with an average mana value of 3 to 4 live in the 37 to 38 land range with 10 or more ramp pieces. This is the standard band for most Commander builds and it works because the ramp and lands actually cover for each other, the way the math assumes they will.

Storm and combo spellslinger builds are the exception. Thirty-three to 35 lands, including modal double-faced cards, is defensible there, because topdecking a land when you are trying to chain cantrips is not just a blank draw. It is an active deceleration. One deckbuilder put it plainly: getting lands on top of your library slows you down when your gameplan requires spells. The question shifts from "how much mana do I need" to "what does each land drop actually do for my specific game plan beyond enabling my spells." These are different questions, and they produce different answers.

What a Land-Light Deck Actually Feels Like to Play

You keep a four-land hand. Reasonable. You play your first land on turn one, your second on turn two. Turn three, you draw a third land and a removal spell. Turn four, you draw another removal spell and no land. You cast Cultivate as catch-up, grabbing two basics, one into hand. You are now, functionally, on turn two mana development while the rest of the table is casting their four-drops.

This is not a story about variance. This is the specific failure mode of 32 to 34 land midrange builds playing out as designed. The Cultivate you drew is not advancing your board. It is closing a deficit you created at deck construction. You spent a card and three mana and a turn to arrive somewhere you should have been two turns ago.

Now consider what happened at that table while you were spending your turn on catch-up ramp. The Atraxa player developed two permanents and three counter triggers. The Meren player has a graveyard with something in it, which means something is coming back next turn. The person across from you has been quiet, which, in my experience at tables I've sat at for the last eleven years, means they have something going on that requires four or five turns to assemble and they are almost done assembling it. Nobody targeted you because you were not threatening enough to bother with. Table memory is forming around your absence from relevance, not your presence.

Tempo loss in Commander compounds because you are facing three people progressing simultaneously. A two-land deficit against one opponent is recoverable. A two-land deficit against three is a social and political problem disguised as a math problem. Running 42 or more lands in a non-landfall deck creates the opposite failure: you are flooding late game, drawing plains while everyone else draws gas. Thirty-eight is the number that avoids both failure modes. It is not magic. It is just correct.

Your Commander's Mana Cost Is the Single Most Useful Variable

Start at 38. For each mana above 4 in your commander's total cost, add one land. A six-mana commander wants 40 lands and a full ramp suite. A seven-mana commander wants 41 lands and should probably have a conversation with itself about life choices. This is the heuristic. It is not complicated, and it is almost always right.

Your commander is the card you cast most often in a game. The command tax is real, the re-cast cost is real, and the inability to deploy your commander on curve is a tax on every subsequent turn. Krenko, Mob Boss costs four mana, which is reasonable enough that a fast tribal build can lean toward 36 lands with 10 or more ramp pieces and not fall apart. Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait costs six. You are targeting 40 lands minimum. Every source that touches this question converges there.

The edge case worth naming: commanders that are the ramp engine themselves. Aesi triggers draw on landfall and lets you play additional lands. The Necrobloom gives land cards in your graveyard dredge 2, which means it is generating land access through a completely different axis. For these commanders, you can reduce your ramp spell count because the commander is doing that work. You do not reduce your land count. The lands are still the resource triggering the engine. Cutting lands in a landfall deck to run more ramp spells is a normal and bad idea. The lands are not mana. The lands are the win condition wearing mana's clothing.

MDFCs Are Almost Free. Do Not Overthink Them.

Bala Ged Recovery

Bala Ged Recovery is sometimes talked about as a clever trick, a way to shave a land slot without paying the usual consistency price. The conventional framing presents it as a loophole in the deckbuilding math. Here is what it actually is: a land that also returns a card from your graveyard to your hand when you have already hit your land drop for the turn. The spell face is a windfall. The land face is the reason it belongs in your deck. Count Bala Ged Sanctuary toward your land total. Count Akoum Teeth toward your land total. They are lands. They happen to have spell faces when drawing another land would be a dead draw. This is genuinely close to free value and you should include every one of these you can afford on budget.

The tempo cost is real, though. Bala Ged Sanctuary and Akoum Teeth enter tapped. On turns one through three, a tapped land is a meaningful deceleration. Playing Akoum Teeth as a land on turn two and being unable to cast a two-drop until turn three is a real cost. They are not equivalent to untapped lands in your early turns. The correct mental model: count them as lands toward your baseline, treat the spell face as a bonus you collect in the mid-to-late game, and do not use their existence as justification to run 32 lands and call it 36. Two to three MDFCs in a build can let you run two or three fewer pure land slots without a meaningful consistency penalty. They do not grant you permission to dip below 36 total. They are an efficiency tool. They are not a workaround for the math.

The One Number You Should Commit To

Thirty-eight lands. That is the specific baseline. Not a range. Not a starting point for negotiation. Thirty-eight, adjusted upward for expensive commanders and landfall builds, adjusted downward only when your archetype has a legitimate structural reason for it and you understand exactly what you are trading away.

The EDHREC average land count is not a neutral data point. It is actively harmful advice for the specific audience most likely to copy it. Newer players, players building their second or third Commander deck, players who do not yet know the math looks like 42 before ramp makes it look like 38 -- these are the people who see that 33-land average and assume it has been validated by the community. It has not. It has been submitted by the community. That is different. The writers on that same platform have called it malnourished in their own articles. The data describes what people do. What people do is wrong, and they wonder why their decks gas out by turn six.

The one build where 38 breaks down is storm and combo spellslinger with ten or more cantrips and a meaningful MDFC package. Thirty-five is defensible there, because the gameplan requires spells on top of your library, not lands. This is the exception. It is a narrow exception with a specific structural justification. It is not a license for midrange Grixis value decks to run 34 lands because the pilot wanted room for one more removal spell.

Before you cut a single land for another spell, ask one question: does your commander cost more than four mana. If it does, you are probably adding lands, not removing them. The deck you are building with 34 lands is not a tighter deck. It is a deck that will spend turns three and four casting Cultivate as damage control instead of playing Magic. I have watched this happen at four-player pods more times than I can count over eleven years of sitting in that fourth chair. The apology rate I track for my own decks is currently at 3.7 per month. None of those apologies were for running too many lands. Not one.
