Ad Nauseam
Instant · Rare
It's a real combo piece pretending to be a card draw spell, and the tables that hate it hate it for good reason.
Why it stings
Ad Nauseam has been in Commander decks for years, and it still splits tables the same way: either it ends the game on your turn, or it strands you at single-digit life with a hand full of lands and no way to close.
What it does
You flip cards off the top one at a time, taking them into hand while paying life equal to each one's mana value, stopping whenever you want or whenever your life total forces you to.
Where it shines
It's the payoff in dedicated life-payment combo decks, usually paired with a way to win off an empty library or a huge hand rather than just as a draw spell in a midrange pile.
Plays well with
- Angel's Grace stops you from losing to Ad Nauseam's life loss, letting you flip your whole deck into hand before pivoting into a Laboratory Maniac style win.
- After Ad Nauseam empties or thins your library, Thassa's Oracle turns that near-empty deck into an immediate win.
- A cheap tutor like Gamble sets up the combo pieces Ad Nauseam needs to convert its card draw into an actual kill instead of just a big hand.
The catch
Outside of a deck built with a cheap curve and a real combo finish, it's a liability. High mana value cards on top brick the spell and put you at critical life for nothing.
