The interaction
This question keeps coming up in rules discussions: does Phyrexian Metamorph 'update' if the thing it copied changes later, or leave the battlefield and come back? The answer trips up even experienced tables, and it matters a lot when Sharuum the Hegemon is involved.
What it does
It enters as a copy of any artifact or any creature you can see on the battlefield, and it's also an artifact no matter what it copies, so it can be reanimated by artifact-recursion effects even when the original couldn't be.
Where it shines
Sharuum the Hegemon decks love it: copy a value artifact, then loop it back with Sharuum's trigger since Metamorph counts as an artifact in the graveyard too.
Plays well with
- Metamorph is an artifact in addition to whatever it copies, so Sharuum can return it from the graveyard to copy something new all over again.
- Copying each other back and forth sets up a simple infinite loop that any sacrifice or activation payoff can turn into a win.
- Same body, same mana value, but Metamorph adds the artifact type and lets you pay with life instead of blue when you're stretched on mana.
The catch
The copy locks in the moment it enters. If the original creature or artifact gets buffed, equipped, or otherwise changed after that, Metamorph doesn't follow along, so timing your copy target matters more than people expect.
