A build-around commander that rewards patience: hold your biggest Eldrazi until you've stacked value on the board, not until you've simply drawn it.
The interaction
Two years in, this trigger still trips people up in play. Ulalek's ability triggers when you cast an Eldrazi spell, but you don't pay the {C}{C} or copy anything until that trigger resolves. Whatever spells and abilities you control at that moment get copied, not just what was on the stack when you cast the Eldrazi.
What it does
Cast an Eldrazi and you get a trigger. Pay {C}{C} when it resolves, and every spell you control plus every other activated and triggered ability you control gets copied, with new targets allowed. That includes things that entered the stack after the Eldrazi, as long as they're still there when the ability resolves.
Where it shines
Five-color Eldrazi tribal decks that stack multiple triggers or spells before committing to the payment, then copy the whole pile at once.
Plays well with
- Its cast trigger is powerful enough that paying the extra {C}{C} to copy it for another 10/10 and Annihilator 2 trigger is almost always worth it.
- Casting it as an Eldrazi spell lets you copy its modal effects along with anything else you control when the ability resolves, doubling up on value in one turn.
- The extra colorless it generates makes it easier to actually afford the {C}{C} payment on turns when you're casting your biggest Eldrazi threats.
The catch
Ulalek herself is a 2/5 for five mana with no board impact on her own. You're paying a tax every single time you want value, and if you don't have spare colorless floating, the trigger fizzles into nothing.
