Card of the Day · July 7, 2026 Format Mover
Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
Legendary Creature — Phyrexian Praetor · Mythic
It's a boardwipe and anthem stapled together, and that's exactly why it draws complaints about games ending before they start.
Why now
This card has been doing the same job in white creature decks for years: wipe their small stuff, buff yours, end the turn with a battlefield nobody else wants to be looking at.
What it does
Every opposing creature with toughness 2 or less dies outright, everything else your opponents control shrinks by 2/2, and your other creatures grow by the same amount. One card, two battlefields, completely different outcomes.
Where it shines
Mono-white or white-heavy stax and reanimator shells, where you either grind into seven mana naturally or cheat it into play early and just watch the opposing board evaporate.
Plays well with
- Pattern tutors Elesh Norn straight to the battlefield, skipping the wait to hit seven mana.
- Both punish small creatures on entry from different angles, so opponents can't build around surviving just one of them.
- Toxrill applies the same kind of relentless board pressure over time that Elesh Norn applies instantly, so decks that fear one tend to fear the other.
The catch
It does nothing for your hand or your mana rocks, and if your own board is full of small utility creatures, you're eating some of that -2/-2 math indirectly by having fewer bodies worth protecting.
