Why now
This is the card that turns a fair blink deck into a one-sided arms race.
What it does
Anything you control that triggers off a permanent entering fires an extra time, so your ETB creatures and their doubled cousins get real work done. Meanwhile permanents entering under your opponents' control don't trigger their abilities at all, so their ETB creatures come down as vanilla bodies.
Where it shines
Blink and flicker shells built around commanders like Sisay or any legendary tutor package love it, since Elesh Norn is fetchable and doubles as a Torpor Orb effect against the table. Landfall decks running things like Retreat to Emeria also get extra mileage out of every land drop.
Plays well with
- Stacks as a second, redundant doubling effect so your ETB triggers can fire even more times off a single permanent entering.
- Both double your ETB triggers, but Elesh Norn adds the extra step of shutting off your opponents' triggers entirely, which Yarok never does.
- Landing Elesh Norn first and following with Tyrant of Kher Ridges turns its enter-the-battlefield damage trigger into two separate blasts.
The catch
It costs five and does nothing on its own turn one through four, so if your deck isn't full of ETB payoffs you're just paying five mana for asymmetrical hate that doesn't advance your board.
