Isshin, Two Heavens as One

Legendary Creature — Human Samurai · Rare

EDHREC #1,452 Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty

Isshin is the best three-mana value engine in Mardu, and if your build isn't exploiting triggered abilities from your own permanents, you're playing the wrong deck.

The interaction

A question that keeps coming up: do Avatar: The Last Airbender attack triggers double under Isshin? Yes, they do, and the confusion around this has been grinding for a while now with cards like Firebender Ascension and Fire Lord Azula showing up in Mardu attack decks.

What it does

Every creature you control that triggers an ability on one of your permanents when it attacks causes that ability to trigger a second time. One attacker, two triggers. Ten attackers, twenty triggers. Isshin doesn't care about the creature itself having the ability, only that your permanent has it, so enchantments like Firebender Ascension and permanents like Éomer, Marshal of Rohan both qualify. The interaction players most often misread: Isshin's text requires the triggered ability to belong to a permanent you control. Opponents' triggers don't double, and abilities on the attacking creature itself are only covered if you also control a permanent with that trigger, which is rarely how they're written.

Where it shines

Token-flood aggro with a damage-on-attack enchantment package. Stack triggers from cards like Éomer, Marshal of Rohan and Firebender Ascension, swing wide with tokens, and watch every trigger fire twice. Roaming Throne pairs as a redundant doubler, which means attack steps can generate three triggers per creature if both are in play. That's not a hypothetical; it's a repeatable win condition.

Plays well with

The catch

Isshin himself is a three-power, three-toughness creature with no protection text, so a single removal spell at the wrong moment collapses your entire engine before combat math even matters. You're investing your game plan in a 3/3 with no built-in resilience.
