Necropotence
Enchantment · Mythic
It's a Bracket 3-plus card wearing a Bracket 2 costume, and pretending otherwise is the actual controversy.
The debate
Necropotence keeps coming up as the card that outs a Bracket 2 table lying to itself, and the arguments are getting heated because the card is exactly as broken as everyone remembers.
What it does
You give up your normal draw step and instead pay life to exile cards face down off the top of your library, each one landing in your hand at your next end step. It turns spare life total into a card advantage engine you control the pace of.
Where it shines
Mono-black or black-heavy control shells that want to dump their hand fast, refuel through Necropotence, and close the game before the life total runs out.
Plays well with
- Ritual into Necropotence on turn one gets the engine online before anyone else has cast a real spell.
- Both cards turn your life total into card advantage, so they stack the same resource conversion instead of competing for it.
- Stacking two unrelated card advantage engines in the same colors means you're never short on gas even after you dump your hand.
The catch
The one-turn delay on every card means you're playing from behind on tempo the turn you activate it, and a fast table can punish the life loss before the cards even arrive.
