Why now
Five years past its Double Masters printing, Atraxa still sits near the top of counters-and-proliferate decks because nothing else stacks a free, repeatable value engine onto a 4/4 flying, vigilance, deathtouch, lifelink body this cleanly.
What it does
Every end step, you get to add another counter of every kind already present on any permanents and players you choose. That means loyalty ticks up, +1/+1 counters grow, poison counters climb, and any experience or charge counters keep compounding, all without spending a card or mana.
Where it shines
Counters-matter piles, superfriends decks stacking loyalty, and infect builds racing to ten poison. She turns any counter type you're already using into a snowball.
Plays well with
- Doubling Season doubles the counters her proliferate adds, turning a steady climb into explosive growth on creatures and planeswalkers alike.
- Yawgmoth converts creatures and their -1/-1 counters into card draw and removal, and Atraxa's proliferate keeps feeding those counters back in.
- Mercadian Lift is a cheap, repeatable proliferate source that keeps her counter engine running even when she's stuck in hand or the command zone.
The catch
She does nothing on her own if your deck isn't already full of counters. Cast her in a deck without a critical mass of proliferate targets and she's just a good stat line with an ability that whiffs.
