Doubling Season
Enchantment · Mythic
Five mana for a permanent that doubles every counter and every token your deck produces is just correct in any green strategy built around either mechanic.
Why now
Proliferate builds, saga reanimation loops, planeswalker ramp decks — Doubling Season keeps showing up across all of them because it solves the same problem every time: your payoffs don't scale fast enough without it.
What it does
Any effect that creates tokens under your control creates twice as many. Any effect that puts counters on a permanent you control puts twice as many. That covers creature counters, loyalty counters on planeswalkers, lore counters on sagas — the whole range. Post-2026 rules, non-Read Ahead sagas entering with their first lore counter now get doubled, which means they enter with two counters and trigger both Chapter I and Chapter II at once, neither chapter is skipped.
Where it shines
Ghave, Guru of Spores and similar counter-to-token conversion commanders are the clearest beneficiaries — Doubling Season makes every conversion step produce twice the output, and pairing it with Ashnod's Altar turns that engine into an infinite loop. In Temur proliferate builds, every proliferate step doubles down on already-doubled counters. With planeswalkers, the doubled starting loyalty frequently pushes them within activation range of abilities they wouldn't otherwise reach on arrival.
Plays well with
- Doubling Season is a powerful enchantment that removes our combo, but we'll still see the token-doubling advantages through our Parallel Lives.
- Anointed Procession does what Doubling Season does, but cheaper.
- Primal Vigor does what Doubling Season does, but cheaper.
- Ghave, Guru of Spores converts +1/+1 counters into tokens and back again, enabling infinite loops with cards like Ashnod's Altar.
- The more tokens we can generate, the better. We’ve already mentioned many creatures that can produce Saprolings, so what’s the harm in adding Doubling Season, Second Harvest, and Saproling Symbiosis?
The catch
At five mana, it does nothing the turn it enters and is a removal magnet before you untap. Players running Parallel Lives or Anointed Procession get half the effect for two to three mana less — if you only care about tokens, those are defensible cuts. Doubling Season is the right call specifically when your deck needs both halves of the effect.
