Players keep poking at Mana Drain from both directions: it's a joke when someone slams a rock on turn one, and a real gripe when the $50 price tag meets a deck that hesitates. Neither argument changes what it quietly does for blue control. It stops the spell and pays you back for it.

The take
Mana Drain isn't the broken staple its reputation suggests, but in a deck built to hold up mana and punish a big play, nothing at this cost refunds you like it does.
About $50, and still a top-150 card by EDHREC rank
Plays well with
-
Cyclonic Rift
Counter the big threat with Mana Drain, then use the colorless you get back on your next main phase to follow up with Rift or more action.
-
Jeweled Lotus
Both are fast, mana-positive plays that reward a deck built around open mana and big turns, so they pair naturally in a high-powered blue shell.

Mana Drain Rulings
- Nov 10, 2020
If the target spell is an illegal target by the time Mana Drain tries to resolve, Mana Drain doesn't resolve. You don't add mana at the beginning of your next main phase. If the target is legal but not countered (most likely because an effect says that the spell can't be countered), you do add mana.
- Nov 10, 2020
Mana Drain's delayed triggered ability will usually trigger at the beginning of your precombat main phase. However, if you cast Mana Drain during your precombat main phase or during your combat phase, its delayed triggered ability will trigger at the beginning of that turn's postcombat main phase.
